Soft Truck Topper – Lightweight Folding Cap by A.R.E.
Our soft truck topper brings you the weather protection of a traditional cap with the flexibility to drop flat in seconds. Built with marine-grade vinyl and an aluminum bow frame, this soft top canopy for trucks seals against rain and dust while adding barely 40 pounds to your bed.
When you need full bed access for taller cargo—landscaping gear, bikes, lumber—release four quick-clips and fold the entire canopy forward onto your cab. No tools, no detaching, no storage hassle. We designed it for weekend warriors who haul anything and everything, from camping kits to building materials, without committing to a permanent hard shell.
What makes our folding soft cap stand out

Materials & frame construction
We anchor the soft top with five powder-coated aluminum bows that arch across your bed rail to rail. Each bow locks into a clamp bracket that bolts through your stake pockets or bed rail, distributing tension evenly so the vinyl stays taut in highway wind. The marine-grade vinyl canopy stretches over the frame and secures with industrial-strength zippers at the rear and side windows. UV inhibitors in the vinyl weave resist fading and cracking through years of sun exposure.
The frame itself weighs less than most toolboxes—under 20 pounds for the entire bow set—so your fuel economy takes no meaningful hit. When folded forward, the bows nest flat against the cab window, leaving your entire bed open without removing a single piece.

Installation & truck bed fit
Our soft topper ships with application-specific clamp brackets for your make, model, and bed length. Most installers finish a full mount in under an hour using basic hand tools—no drilling required on trucks with factory stake pockets. We include illustrated instructions and all necessary hardware: brackets, U-bolts, tension straps, and weatherstrip tape for the tailgate seal.
Bed length compatibility
The soft cap fits 5.5-foot, 6.5-foot, and 8-foot beds on popular full-size models (Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan) and mid-size platforms (Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger). During checkout, select your truck’s year, make, model, and bed length, and we ship the correct bracket set and vinyl panel pre-sized to your rails.
Weather sealing & ventilation
The rear panel zips down completely for full tailgate access, or you can drop just the bottom half to slide long items—surfboards, kayaks, dimensional lumber—while keeping rain off the front half of your bed. Side windows unzip independently for cross-ventilation on warm days, and mesh bug screens behind each window keep insects out when you’re camped overnight.
At the tailgate, an adjustable tension strap cinches the vinyl down onto a foam weatherstrip you apply to the tailgate top edge. This creates a seal that keeps road spray and light rain out; while it’s not submersion-proof like a hard shell, most owners report dry cargo after highway storms. For absolute waterproofing in heavy weather, add our optional tailgate seal upgrade kit—a rubber gasket that compresses when the tailgate latches closed.

Soft topper questions – installation, weather sealing & care
Yes. The folded canopy secures against your cab window with elastic retention straps, and customers routinely drive at highway speeds in folded mode when hauling tall cargo. The bows are stainless-pinned and won't flap or lift. Just make sure the retention straps are clipped before you hit the road.
The vinyl sheds light snow well, and the bow frame is rated to support up to 150 pounds of static load—enough for typical snowfall in most regions. For heavy, wet snow or prolonged winter parking, we recommend brushing accumulation off the top to prevent excess weight from stretching the vinyl. The material itself stays flexible in freezing temps and won't crack like cheaper vinyl tarps.
Yes. Our clamp brackets are designed to fit over drop-in plastic liners and spray-in bedliners alike. The brackets bolt through your stake pockets (or directly to the bed rail on trucks without pockets), so the liner underneath doesn't interfere. If you have a thick rail cap or tonneau-cover rail system already installed, measure your available stake-pocket depth before ordering.
A soft topper gives you enclosed vertical space—bikes, coolers, and gear stay upright and protected from rain. A roll-up tonneau cover lies flat against your bed floor, so tall items won't fit. Our soft top also folds forward to give you the open bed of a tonneau when you need it, but with the added option of locking side and rear doors for secure storage. Think of it as a hybrid between a traditional cap and a low-profile cover.
The rear zipper accepts a small padlock through the zipper pulls, which deters casual theft. For higher security, consider pairing the soft top with our optional locking tailgate latch—once your tailgate is locked, the canopy can't be opened from outside. Keep in mind that vinyl is cuttable, so this setup is best for deterring opportunistic access rather than defending against determined forced entry.
Wash the vinyl with mild soap and water every few months, especially if you drive on dirt roads or in coastal salt air. Avoid petroleum-based cleaners or abrasive brushes, which can degrade the UV coating. Once a year, apply a vinyl protectant spray (303 Aerospace Protectant or similar) to keep the material supple and UV-resistant. Lubricate the zippers with silicone spray to keep them sliding smoothly.
It depends on the toolbox placement. If your toolbox sits against the cab and the canopy's front bow can clear it, you're fine—many customers run crossover toolboxes under soft toppers. Bed extenders that clamp to the tailgate may interfere with the rear tension strap; in that case, you'll need to remove the extender when the canopy is deployed. Measure your bed's clear length from the cab to the tailgate with your accessories in place, and compare it to our fit guide during checkout.
